Explorer doesn't display Properties

When you right click a folder or drive in Windows Explorer (NOT internet explorer) you get a menu with the bottom choice 'properties' and clicking on it will show you the size of that folder and its subfolders and other good stuff.

It won't work for me now. The right click works but the left click on Properties does nothing.
The same with 'Sharing'.

Any help much appreciated. I can't find anything anywhere. Microsoft support site doesn't ever seem to have the answers I want - am I doing something wrong or do other experience the same thing?
